USC Alumni Volunteer Onboarding Course as an Instructional Intervention
Alumni Onboarding Program is a self-paced, asynchronous online course that helps alumni become volunteers through the USC Alumni Association. It introduces involvement opportunities, provides a consistent onboarding experience, and ensures content accuracy across volunteer programs. The course aims to boost volunteers’ confidence in representing the university's mission and the Alumni Association's role, while fostering a sense of belonging to the Trojan family.
Instructional Needs Assessment
course provides an instructional solution for onboarding volunteers at the USC Alumni Association. Addressing this is crucial, as volunteer experiences during events impact retention and recruitment. Engagement with the Association and program selection depend on understanding USC's mission, project delegation, and alignment values. The "problem" model (Smith & Ragan, 200) evaluated the onboarding process to identify the need for uniform and address rapid turnover and recruiting inconsistencies. The "discrepancy" model was not as no prior training existed for comparison. Consultations revealed a need for instruction and ruled out other causes for poor retention. Program managers cited volunteer feedback highlighting gaps in recruiting and onboarding practices. One volunteer expressed uncertainty about expectations and attendee, while another felt her expertise was mismatched due to a lack of information about the audience. This feedback led to the design of the USC Alumni Volunteer Onboarding instructional solution.
